![]() John clearly saw the Lazarus event as the last great deed Jesus performed as proof of his divinity before his arrest and crucifixion. So when Lazarus fell seriously ill, the sisters sent for Jesus, the healer. Jesus loved these three, and they loved him and believed in him. We remember Mary as the woman who poured expensive perfume on Jesus’ feet and wiped them with her hair. So when the messengers reached Jesus in 11:6, it seems that Jesus must have been at least one full day's travel from Bethany. Mary, Martha and Lazarus were siblings living in Bethany just a short distance from Jerusalem. When Jesus reaches Bethany, Lazarus has been dead for four days (11:17). However, Luke’s account of this event is much briefer than John’s Lazarus story, and it happens much earlier in Jesus’ life. John 11:6 has Jesus receiving word of Lazarus' illness and then staying put for two days. In Luke 7:14-15, Jesus raises the dead son of a widow, with the wording of Luke (‘And he that was dead sat up’) being echoed by John’s ‘And he that was dead came forth’. Whatever the truth of it, there are examples elsewhere in the Gospels of Jesus raising the dead. It’s possible (as the authors of the Dictionary of the Bible suggest) that John is expanding the parable of the rich man and Lazarus from Luke’s gospel (in which Lazarus, the humble beggar, goes to heaven but the rich man does not). It can be found in the story about The Raising of Lazarus (John 11:1-44). This is known to be the shortest verse in the Bible. But only John mentions the story of Jesus raising Lazarus (the other one) from the dead. Matthew 21:17 New International Version 17 And he left them and went out of the city to Bethany, where he spent the night. Bible Verse: John 11:35 (NLT) Then Jesus wept. Luke (chapter 16) tells of Jesus’ parable of the rich man and Lazarus, but this Lazarus (a beggar) isn’t the one whom Jesus raised from the dead. They appear to have been different people.
